This is one of the main commercial varieties to be grown in New Zealand. 'Magnus' is disease resistant, a reliable producer and has an upright habit. The currants are ripe late December - January. Delicious and deciduous.

Black currants will grow in sun or semi-shade. They like deep acid soil that does not completely dry out in summer when the fruit are setting. They fruit on the new seasons wood which develops after pruning. They are hardy with an upright growth habit. Produces heavy crops of large fruit that are rich in Vitamin C which are perfect for making desserts jelly, jam, juice or add to ice cream, cordial and liqueur.

Excellent grown in a container on the deck where you can harvest and eat directly! Self fertile, but yields increase when two or more are planted.

For an extra good start, incorporate compost to the soil and mulch after planting to support a healthy root system. Requires good winter chilling hours. Prune late winter. Fertilise in early autumn.
