Michelia Figo

Michelia figo or Port Wine Magnolia is a versatile small tree or shrub with glossy green foliage and compact habit. In mid spring on older wood, small creamy white flowers with a pink or lilac edge are produced with a heavy scent often described as smelling like juicy fruit chewing gum or spicy banana.

Michelia figo prefers a rich well drained slightly acidic soil and is happy in full sun or partial shade so long as the roots are kept cool and moist. A light trim in late spring will often encourage this shrub to flower again in summer.
