Phormium tenax is an evergreen perennial plant native to New Zealand and Norfolk Island that is an important fibre plant and a popular ornamental plant. The plant grows as a clump of long, straplike leaves, from which arises a much taller flowering shoot, with dramatic yellow or red flower. Tolerant of a wide range of sites including swampy and coastal.
Excellent low shelter and erosion control. Seeds from January-March and nectar from December-January are very attractive to birds and bees. Evergreen. Very hardy.
Grows to around 5m tall with flower spike and 2m wide.
